Confessions of a WordPress Web Designer: I started with WIX!

I wasn’t always a WordPress SEO consultant. I did the hard yards and danced around with WIX, Squarespace, WordPress, back to Squarespace, and finally, WordPress again.

My website journey was a rollercoaster.

Why go through the same drama I did? Learn from my website woes and save yourself the hassle.

Ever thought building a website was as easy as they make it out on TV?

I did.

And I couldn’t have been more WRONG.

Back in 2013, I started with a Wix website . They promised simplicity, drag-and-drop ease, and I was SOLD. But soon, I hit a wall.

While Wix makes building a site child’s play, when it comes to SEO, it’s like playing piano with mittens. Customising URLs? Limited. Advanced SEO settings? Forget about it.

So, I moved to Squarespace.

Sleek, elegant, beautiful templates. It felt like upgrading from a toy car to a sports car. But then, the reality hit.

Although Squarespace offers better SEO capabilities than Wix, it still falls short. Limited control over metadata and URL structure can be a nightmare for serious SEO. And don’t get me started on the plugins – or lack thereof.

Next stop, WordPress.

It was like stepping into a universe of possibilities. Plugins for everything, from SEO to e-commerce. Flexibility that made me feel like a kid in a candy store.

But wait, I went back to Squarespace. Why? Perhaps, I was seduced by its aesthetic appeal once again.

But the same old issues resurfaced. Yeah, it was visually stunning but SEO-wise, I was back to square one.

Websites are so much more than aesthetics

Back to WordPress….again!

Because something clicked.

WordPress is not just a platform; it’s an entire ecosystem.

  • SEO is a breeze with plugins like Yoast and All in One SEO. From meta descriptions to canonical tags, EVERYTHING is customisable.
  • Functionality? Endless. Need an e-commerce store? WooCommerce has got you covered. Blogging? WordPress was born for it.
  • Usability? It’s as easy or as complex as you want it to be. Drag-and-drop builders like Elementor make designing a piece of cake, yet the underlying power is immense.

For serious business owners, WordPress is the holy grail. And many other SEO consultants agree.

Why? Because it gives you control. Control over your SEO, control over your design, and control over your business destiny.

So, here’s my advice from a (now) seasoned WordPress SEO consultant:

If you’re serious about your business, don’t get fooled by the eye candy like I did. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should! Quick and dirty website builders may offer the dream, but websites are so much more than flashy designs. They need to be optimised for performance, SEO, and user experience to truly drive results and grow your business. Invest in a solution that builds a solid foundation for long-term success.

Choose WordPress.

It’s the platform that will grow with you, not hold you back.

Believe me, I’ve been there and I ain’t going through that again!
